A Brooklyn Girl’s Guide to Bollywood
If Slumdog Millionaire is the ONLY Indian Film you’ve ever seen… you’re in for a huge surprise!
For many Americans, Slumdog Millionaire was the only introduction they’ve ever had to the world of all things Indian. And for many… Slumdog is more than enough! But for those of us who have watched and fell in love; we simply CANNOT stop there!
As you’ve probably discovered with Slumdog, Indian films are slow to build and can run about 3 hours long (On a good day) because they like to take their time with the story lines. So if you’re gonna commit, be sure to grab more than just popcorn… it’s gonna be a while! (And you might cry too)
If you’ve wanted to watch more films since ‘Slumdog’ but didn’t know where to start, here’s a guide to what you can find on Netflix to help get you started. Netflix? Yup, but let’s face it, the best Indian movies you’ll ever watch are NOT on Netflix, but at least you can get familiar with the major players before you dare venture out on your own to greener pastures… i.e. “Bagbaan” (aaaah, bliss).
NETFLIX INSTANT VIDEO PICKS:
1.) Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge:
This is probably one of the most talked about movies in Bollywood. If you go anywhere and say the names “Raj and Simran”, every avid, Indian movie lover will know exactly who you ‘re referring to. They’ll say, “The Train, The Train” and then your hearts will melt in remembrance. It’s everything that romantic dramas are made of… with great big cry in the end.

2.) Chak De! India
Another great one with the talented SRK- Starring Shah Rukh Khan
This is the movie is the Coach Carter of India. Only it’s not about basketball but more about hockey (or their version of…) and the coach isn’t played by Samuel L. Jackson, but he’s just as bad ass, if you ask me. (but you didn’t ask me!) Okay, so maybe they’re not exactly the same but what they do have in common is that no-nonsense coach that does everything to whip his team of
boys, oops, girls into shape because he has a lot to prove and really believes that they can do it. But more so because he has a LOT to prove. He didn’t just let his team down, he let the entire Republic of India down. He’s doing everything to make it up to himself and his country but he gets stuck with a team of misfits… the odds are NOT in his favor.

But why do they keep shouting his name? Well… maybe because he can’t hear… and uh… can’t speak. He’s sorta kinda is a deaf-mute, which keeps the movie a little interesting. As you can see from the poster, he’s found his own forms of communication and uses them in a good-natured, Charlie Chaplin, sort of way. Okay… he’s sort of a goof ball. And although that can get tiresome pretty quickly, he’s such a sweetie and a charmer, that you can’t help but to love him and watch more to see how his life will turn out. Life throws him more downs than ups but he never complains and tries hard to keep a smile on his face. Although he’s in love with a woman who is out of his societal league and falls to the pressure of what her family and caste of people will say, he has a girl, Jhimil, who is deeply in love with him, who will tag-along and follow him into the depths of despair just to be with him. But because Jhimil is autistic and sheltered, no one believes that she even knows what love is. With all of the twists and turns- this movie will surprise you…

A period piece with a little girl who’ll steal your heart. Starring John Abraham and Sarala Kariyawasam
So this isn’t the sing and dance-along that you’re used to but the well is definitely deep enough to draw you in and open your eyes to a different side of Indian culture that you are probably not used to. This movie shows you the harsh reality that many Indian women have faced in dealing with widowhood and the societal castes that restrict them from ever having a decent life afterwards. Imagine living in a nursing home that’s comparable to the worst group homes that the city has to offer… but this group home or monastery is forced on the young and able women as well. But what to you do when the widow isn’t a woman and is only 8 years old?

This movie is the classic boy meets girl, girl is annoying, boy ditches girl, boy can’t stop thinking about how crazy girl makes him and somehow sticks around and develops, dare-I-say?, feelings. Yikes! This isn’t the train love that Raj and Simran shared but you’ll root for the mixed-match pair to stay together and joyfully bring out the worst in each other… in a loving kind of way of course. He’s buttoned up, she’s all over the place… they’re exactly what the other one needs.
